Protection of Personal Information Act

how to ensure compliance
The Protection of Personal Information Act (no.4 of 2013) , most commonly known as POPI or POPIA will come into complete force and effect on 1 July 2021.
All persons or companies involved in the manual or automatic receipt, recording, storage or use of client information will be required to be completely POPI compliant failing which, may make one liable upon conviction to a fine and/or imprisonment.
Knowledge and understanding of the POPI Act and the conditions it imposes for the lawful use and storage of information is vital to remaining competitive in the market.
LOCS offers a short, one day course (offered online or in person) that provides practical explanation of the Act and its provisions.

This course briefly considers the background , purpose and scope of POPIA, with an easy step by step guide to determining the application of POPI to information collected. This is followed by an in depth discussion and explanation on the 8 conditions prescribed by the Act for the lawful processing of information with an easy, simple to use guide to ensure compliance. The course additionally distinguishes between personal information and special personal information, while also covering the cross border transfer of information, direct marketing , prior authorisation for the processing of certain personal information and lastly the roles and importance of the information officer and information regulator.
Particular focus will be given to the collection of personal information by means of social media and website/newsletter subscriptions with practical examples and will provide step by step guides to ensure compliance .
